National Do Not Call Registry
The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint. You can register your home or mobile phone for free. Your registration will be effective for five years. Please note: Calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, or those to whom you’ve provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls. |
Spring Fever
Spring is just around the corner and we can look forward to some warm days, long walks and lots of time spent outdoors.
My friend, Josh Richard, will be participating in the Lewisburg M.S. Walk on April 23, 2006. Josh’s Mom, Gaye, and my husband, Jerry, have multiple sclerosis (M.S.), which has limited their mobility and caused many daily struggles.
Josh is looking for sponsors and would like to find a local business to provide matching funds for the pledges he receives. His goal is $500. In support of the national MS Society, you, too, can sponsor Josh. Visit his personal page for more information. And, the next time you step outside to take a walk, think of those with M.S. and ask yourself what you can do to help the cause.

Technology News
Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is a scam to steal valuable information such as credit card and social security numbers, user IDs and passwords. An official-looking e-mail is sent to potential victims pretending to be from their ISP, bank or retail establishment. Emails can be sent to people on selected lists or on any list, expecting that some percentage of recipients will actually have an account with the real organization.
EMail Is the "Bait." The email states that due to internal accounting errors or some other pretext, certain information must be updated to continue your service. A link in the message directs the user to a Web page that asks for financial information. The page looks genuine, because it is easy to fake a valid Web site. Any HTML page on the web can be copied and modified to suit the phishing scheme.
What can you do?
- Never respond to an unsolicited email that asks for personal financial information.
- Report suspicious activity to the proper authorities, including the agency identified in the suspect email.
- Contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center if you think you have received a phishing email or been directed to a bogus website to obtain your personal information.
For more information about phishing, see the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Alert, “How Not to Get Hooked by a ‘ Phishing’ Scam.”
Tiny URL
Ever get tired of copying those long website addresses to share with your family and friends? A useful tool can be found at www.tinyurl.com where you can take a long web address and make a smaller one that will be available forever. To use this tool, simply enter your long web address and click on the button, "Make TinyURL." |
Compassion
Another cause near and dear to my heart is Compassion International, a child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty.
Founded by Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, Compassion began providing Korean war orphans with food, shelter, education and health care, as well as Christian training. Today, Compassion helps more than 728,800 children in more than 20 countries.
After attending a Michael W. Smith concert, my family decided to sponsor two children through Compassion.
As Winston Churchhill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
