Mifflinburg, PA—January 25, 2007—“I always dreamed of owning my own business and loved the idea of working from home, though I never thought that it would become a reality.” Projects by Peggy is a dream come true for Peggy Shields of Mifflinburg. Projects by Peggy provides web and graphic design services to residents, businesses and organizations in Mifflinburg and surrounding communities. Ms. Shields also does freelance work for other firms in the area. It all began in 1998 when Ms. Shields bought her first computer and developed an interest in building web pages. She volunteered to create and maintain a website for the Mifflinburg High School Boys’ Basketball team (www.miffhoops.com), when her son was on the junior high team. She also maintains a website for her church (Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren) and the church’s youth ministry on a voluntary basis. In 2003, Projects by Peggy obtained its first paid client and the business was officially registered to do business in Pennsylvania. Working as a fulltime administrative assistant, Ms. Shields dedicated evenings and weekends to her role as a web designer. In 2005, Ms. Shields joined the Central PA Chamber of Commerce and began to promote the business. Seeing rapid growth in early 2006, Ms. Shields resigned from her fulltime job to focus on growing the business and completing her degree. In March 2004, Ms. Shields headed back to the classroom by enrolling with Westwood College Online. “Never underestimate the power of an education,” she says, “I learned a lot, including things I didn’t realize I needed to know. My education is the foundation for the business and something I am very proud of.” In December, Ms. Shields and her husband traveled to Colorado to participate in the graduation ceremony, which was held at the Westin Hotel in Westminster on December 14. Ms. Shields earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Web Design and Multimedia, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.97 and achieved Dean’s List honors throughout her college career. Ms. Shields was inducted into the Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society, which recognizes academic excellence and integrity, and was a member and recorder of the Student Senate. In July, she was hired by Westwood College as an online Web Design Tutor under the federal work study program. “In reality, my education will never end,” she says, “To keep up with technology, I will always be learning.” Post graduation, Ms. Shields will focus on building Projects by Peggy and utilizing her education and skills to create websites that meet World Wide Web Consortium standards. Projects by Peggy focuses serving and meeting the needs of each client.
